I have a permanent contract with St. Michaels and I am based in a community residential house in Dublin. I am part of a six person social care worker team within the house and I am a keyworker to one of the five residents there. I strive to provide a safe and stimulating environment for adults with a primary intellectual (mild to severe) or cognitive disability. I promote independence within every task in St. Michaels and working within a multi-disciplinary team I feel I am gaining a lot of experience.

My role within St Claire’s was to provide a safe, homely environment for adults with a primary intellectual (mild to severe) or cognitive disability. The aim at St Claire’s is to support each individual to be as independent as possible. Through working in a multi-disciplinary team I was able to help support the residents to achieve independence of move into the wider community. Some of the residents have presented with challenging behaviours and mood disorders.

My role as a facilitator is to help individuals to integrate in community based activities of their choice and to assist people to achieve their goals. Working with 10-18 year olds, who for various reasons may not be able to reside at home or with relations. These young people may sometimes present with challenging behaviours or have developmental disabilities within the residential units. My role was to relate to these individuals, using a therapeutic approach and using it to create personal centred plans to best suit each member. As key worker I also had to develop care plans, monthly reviews & set out budgets & goal plans in order to ensure that the developmental goals for the children were met, while also ensuring a great working environment for everyone.

These young people may sometimes present with extreme challenging behaviours or have developmental disabilities within the residential units. My role within the residential unit was to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these individuals.
