Although I started my career as a drafter/engineering technician I have always strived to find how I can be a value to the organization I work for. This need to be of value has lead me to the career I am in today as Tacoma Power's Emergency Manager. I initially was hired at Tacoma Power in their Generation department as an engineering technician but once I learned about the generation electrical system I strived to do more. A few years into my career an opportunity came up to be part of the Dam Safety group and run their Emergency Action Plan (EAP) program which included writing, maintaining, training and exercising the emergency response plan in accordance with Federal guidelines. I quickly found that I enjoyed this role and over the course of 10 years grew the program into one that was a model for the west coast and one that which the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regularly asked to send other dam owners to as observers on how to conduct their programs and exercises. As the Emergency Management industry started to develop Tacoma Power saw a need for the division within the city to have a dedicated Emergency Manager to coordinate with outside agencies and at that time I applied for the position using my knowledge of the electrical industry as well as what I had learned as the EAP Coordinator. Shortly after I took the role the COVID-19 pandemic hit and we were thrust into writing plans and procedures to protect our employees. I have now built a utility wide team with representatives for each division within the city equal to my role as well as a utility wide Emergency Manager to help coordinate at a higher level. We have also since added support personnel which I currently supervise within Power as our program is young and we are rapidly developing plans and procedure for our entire Emergency Management program. I am proud of what we have done and admit we still have a lot to do to have a robust and resilient Emergency Management program. But if there is one thing you should know about me, it is that I take pride in my work, strive to produce the best product possible and do the job for the betterment of company and community I work for.
