I wrote a dissertation about the politics of science and expertise in China, with a particular eye toward trying to understand big-picture questions of political authority, public opinion, and state-society relations. It does not make for good beach reading, but I am very happy to talk about the many questions it raises about contemporary politics and Chinese society. I also have ongoing research and writing projects in the fields of political and social theory, political economy, and self-deprecation.

I researched and wrote about China and Taiwan while based at the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica, Taiwan's premier research institution. I have amassed a very large tea collection, attended numerous local deity pilgrimages, discovered the horrors of asparagus juice, and also written a dissertation.
