I am the former director of a program at an FQHC that ensures individuals experiencing homelessness can access primary health care services, prescription medication, oral and behavioral health, and enabling services (i.e. transportation, case management, etc). The program also ensured individuals experiencing homelessness have a safe place to recuperate from acute illness or injury on a short-term basis once discharged from the hospital. The work that I do is challenging but it's a calling and I am motivated by making sure the most vulnerable in my community can receive care.I dedicated over 18 years to my previous organization and I started in an entry-level position. Thanks to the National Health Care for the Homeless Council I have learned a lot about work of ensuring healthcare resources to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. With the help of colleagues and friends and through the knowledge I have gained from the Council I was successful in growing the program and ensuring people experiencing homelessness had access to quality patient-centered care. I have met colleagues from all over the country and I have met many people with lived experience of being housing insecure and these people, these friends inspire me to get up every day and continue the work. It's because of them I bring hard work, determination, and a passion to fight for those who are the most vulnerable among us.When I decided to go back to school for my MBAHA after being out of undergraduate studies for so long I was nervous, to say the least. Not going to school wasn't an option, I needed more tools, more knowledge, to make me a better manager, and a better director, so I can build a better program all so I can better serve the most vulnerable in my community. Health care is a Human Right, Housing is a Human Right.As I move into the next chapter of my life, I am extremely excited to be working for the organization that has helped to shape me into the advocate I am today. As the Senior Medical Respite Manager for the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, I will be in a position to help other programs the way I had been helped when I started this work so many years ago. Grounded in human rights and social justice, the Council's mission is to build an equitable, high-quality health care system, through training, research, and advocacy in the movement to end homelessness. It is my honor to be a member of this awesome organization and help continue to move its mission forward.
