As a member of the legal department, I am responsible for handling all employment, labor and education legal matters at the Archdiocese. As senior counsel, I partner with leaders at all levels of the Archdiocese to ensure compliance with applicable laws by:Identifying and assessing legal risks and opportunities within the employment, labor and education areas and developing creative strategies to manage and mitigate risk; Providing day-to-day practical and business-oriented legal advice and direction to leaders at varying levels on topics including, but not limited to, hiring, disputes and litigation, performance management, employee classification, wage and hour, benefits, leaves of absence and accommodations, internal investigations, and reductions;Counseling leaders on pending or new laws, rules and regulations that may impact the Archdiocese; Conducting and managing investigations regarding employee misconduct;Researching legal principles and precedents; Collaborating with leaders in order to achieve their objectives in a manner that mitigates unnecessary risk; Providing guidance to team members in developing solutions to problems presented; Partnering with leaders to develop external communications concerning employment and education matters; Representing the Archdiocese in pre-litigation disputes and employment/education related claims pending before Federal, state and local administrative agencies; Partnering with leaders to develop and implement policies relating to employment and education matters; Engaging and managing outside counsel in employment and education related litigation; Creating and delivering legal training on a variety of employment and education matters; andReviewing, advising, negotiating, and drafting legal documents including but not limited to employment and separation agreements.
