After a career spent in sales and sales training, selling research and consulting, I am delighted to be fundraising for Students to Scholars, a new non-profit of which I am a co-founder. Our mission is to empower promising middle school students from under-resourced communities to access and excel in local independent middle schools, preparing them for success in high school and college. Working with The Boys & Girls Club of Durham and Orange counties, The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, and five Durham, NC independent schools, Triangle Day School, Duke School, Durham Academy, Trinity School, and Carolina Friends School, Students to Scholars identifies promising 3rd-5th grade students and assists them in applying to these schools for middle school and to succeeding there. At these schools they will have the opportunity of an outstanding education that will prepare them for the college track in high school and eventually, for college.Students to Scholars is a unique approach to the continuing problem of he achievement/opportunity gap between Back and LatinX students and White and Asian students. Students to Scholars seeks to give children from historically underserved communities an opportunity for a competitive education that will erase that gap. The results are exciting. S2S children are thriving academically and socially at their new schools and they and their families are enriching the culture of their schools. Co-FounderStudents To Scholars Jan 2017 - PresentRaleigh-Durham, North Carolina AreaStudents to Scholars is a collaboration between local community organizations, including The Boys & Girls Club of Durham and Orange counties, The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, The Hill Center, and five Durham independent middle schools (Triangle Day School, Trinity School, Carolina Friends School, Durham Academy, and Duke School) and families from historically underserved communities. Our mission is to build a bridge between promising and talented 4th and 5th grade students from these communities and independent schools in order to prepare these students for success in high school and college. By attending these schools our students have small teacher/pupil ratios, a variety of pedagogy, and challenging, interesting classwork during their middle school years, which prepares them for success in high school and eventually in college. Students to Scholars assists families with their applications to these schools and provides tutoring and support to help them succeed there.. Twenty-one students have participated in Students to Scholars and our graduates are attending Durham Academy, Hillside High IB program, Jordan High AP program, Cary Academy, Cristo Rey Research Triangle High, Cardinal Gibbons High, Carolina Friends, and Riverside High. All are on the college preparatory path. Not only do our students excel in their new environments but also contribute toward enriching the culture of their schools with their talents, culture, and contributions. Students to Scholars is building a bridge between communities, giving families in historically under-resourced communities with an option for their children's education that will prepare their children for the college path.
