Behavioral Health Utilization Manager
Under the KanCare contract (effective 1/1/13) I am responsible for evaluating the necessity, appropriateness and efficiency of the use of mental health services and facilities. Other responsibilities include clinical review of all acute and sub acute services for appropriateness based on medical necessity criteria, the management of healthcare resources necessary and appropriate for achievement of desired acute and sub acute outcomes, and the coordination of alternative levels of care for members. I have worked with the KCPC system and review the appropriateness of services for substance abuse treatment. I also review and authorize the service provision of SED Waiver services in the State of Kansas. Serving as a patient advocate, seeking and coordinating creative solutions to patients’ health care needs without compromising quality outcomes.
Clinical Utilization Specialist
This is the position I have held since 2007 as the company consolidated with Kansas Health Solutions in January of 2009. I performed many of the same duties that I continue to today. I reviewed mental health services for Medicaid patients in the state of Kansas and dealt directly with authorizations and registrations of Medicaid members to the KHS system. As work processes have changed, I have learned much more about the SED Waiver and PRTF CBA Grant in the state of Kansas. The most recent addition to my job duties has been to assist with SED Waiver audits/reviews for KHS.
Clinical Care Manager
As a Clinical Care Manager, I was responsible for approving mental health services for Medicaid recipients, assist with monitoring quality of care, and collect/review utilization data. While working at KHS, we successfully launched the Prepaid Ambulatory Health Plan (PAHP) in the state of Kansas. Another responsibility of my position was to develop and implement online training to Providers in the state of Kansas for the managed care software of InfoMC. I also traveled to various onsite locations to provide training to KHS network Providers as well as participate in special utilization projects.

As a clinician I provided general outpatient therapy (individual and couples), anger management, domestic violence groups, and collaborated closely with Case Managers to monitor progress of clients. A unique aspect of this position was that I provided therapy to special needs populations who are traditionally underserved in the community. I was responsible for the administration, scoring, and interpreting of intelligence as well as personality tests. A large part of my position entailed coordinating referrals to alternative or supplemental programs in the community. As a clinician, I performed numerous types of evaluations such as: Domestic Violence/Anger Screenings; Psychological Evaluations; Disability Determinations; and Competency to Stand Trial Evaluations.
