Co-managed a $20 million activity in SE Asia to support independent media through innovation, research, and core operational grants; oversaw subcontractors and technical teams to deliver trainings, workshops, and emergency assistance to persecuted journalists.

Led storytelling efforts on how this top-tier school improves lives in Washington state and around the world. Oversaw communications strategy and development, including branding, high-level messaging, internal communications and media relations for more than four years. Previously served as senior writer/editor until March 2016.

Covered breaking news and features in 1999-2000 (WTO protests, urban affairs and the demolition of the Kingdome) and in 2011 (inc. Occupy Seattle and other major stories).

Co-managed $2M+ project portfolio involving journalist training, coaching, and mentoring, with direct supervision of 3 full-time staff and several dozen consultants. Planned and coordinated workshops in radio, TV/video, photography, newsroom management, citizen journalism, election reporting, and other topics; recruited trainers and participants. Oversaw small-grant program and radio news program, supervising a grant manager and radio producer.

Taught immersive, month-long courses on thematic topics for journalists from mainland Southeast Asia. Pioneered in-country journalism training in Myanmar. Wrote two widely used handbooks on journalism. Recruited journalists, conducted media assessments. Designed and taught courses and workshops for ethnic and exile journalists along the Thai/Burma border.

Taught courses in international reporting and editing and conducted workshops and reporting seminars for journalists in south India to help this start-up J-school become a premier training ground.

Taught and directed the advanced journalism workshop for reporters and aspiring journalists from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Conducted media assessments, taught regional and in-country journalism workshops, wrote a handbook on basic journalism geared for reporters in mainland Southeast Asia. Also taught on behalf of the Independent Journalism Foundation.

Co-managed a news operation with 30+ employees, covering issues from the demise of the Khmer Rouge to the country's first self-managed elections. Assigned stories, edited copy, launched an in-house training program. Served as acting editor-in-chief for four months.
