As the Operations Superintendent for the Water and Sewer Maintenance section of Water and Waste Operations of the Utilities and Environment Division for the City of Saskatoon, I oversee the day to day operations in regards to the restoration and preventative maintenance of the City of Saskatoon Water and Sewer systems. While reporting directly to the Manager of Water and Waste Operations, I plan, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the work done by civic staff related to the preservation and operation of the City's water and sewer systems. I ensure that work meets the documented service standards, operational procedures, and occupational health and safety procedures.I manage assigned staff, hire, assign work schedules, assess staffing needs, and identify and pursue other resources when necessary. I will conduct and execute performance management, disciplinary and corrective action, layoff and recall staff as required. I aid in the developing of operational policies, as I am responsible for implementing these policies.I act as a section liaison with various internal and external groups. Reviews and analyzes maintenance and rehabilitation activities and procedures and recommends improvements through business cases, analytics, and project management to assist with the yearly operating budgets to meet approved service levels and ensure that programs are delivered within each budget. I will prepare regular status reports. Identify training requirements and assist with the training, coaching and development of Section employees. Reports concerning policy, procedure, staffing, equipment and materials used in water and sewer preservation and operations.

As an Engineer Technologist, with the City of Saskatoon, I assist with the preparation of contract documents for roadways and water and waste stream projects by preparing cost estimates and tender summaries. I will perform regular inspections of projects to ensure compliance is to standard with the City of Saskatoon specifications. Also, regarding these projects, I prepare progress reports, issue deficiency lists, draft completion and final certificates, compile detailed summaries of expenditures. I also analyze cost, condition, and performance data related to roadway and water and sewer utility systems to establish operations, maintenance, and restoration programs. During the construction phase, I also coordinate and monitor the testing of materials required to ensure compliance with specifications. Review and summarize the results of testing and provide recommendations as required to the contractors. I must identify design, operation, or construction problems and recommend and implement field designs or changes during the construction. I also have to perform accurate preliminary, topographical, construction, benchmark, investigative, and as-built surveys for roadways and water and waste stream operation, maintenance, and construction programs. Complete all calculations related to the acquisition of survey data. Perform quality control checks, as required, and to ensure that all data complies with specified accuracy requirements. During the construction phase, I ensure that all work complies with all occupational health and safety requirements prescribed by the City and Saskatchewan Labour. Communicate regularly with contractors, engineers, other government and regulatory agencies, and the public as required to schedule and coordinate the work.

I also worked closely with the Director of Operations in reviewing, providing technical advice, and ensuring that the development standards are met in regards to infrastructure, water and sanitary, and subdivision applications. In addition, I was also responsible for implementing the action items of Oliver’s Water Conservation Plan, and as the liaison to Interior Health, I ensured that the Town of Oliver fulfilled its health permits of the overall water distribution system through data collection, monitoring, and reporting.
