After many years teaching psychology, I have been an academic copy editor for the past five years, and a colleague and I recently started our own business, Ocean Editors. We offer English language editing services for scholars, scientists, engineers, authors, businesses, and any others who need professional, affordable copy editing. Ocean Editors is an alternative enterprise. Traditional editing companies charge high prices to clients, while their editors receive relatively low compensation--but editors have the skills and credentials that make these companies valuable. Why don't these companies pay their editors better? Because the profit maximization obligation leads them to pay their editors low percentages of revenues in order to create a surplus for the owners. At Ocean Editors, our editors own the company. This business model is better for us and better for our clients, too.
