About Jeff Rossin

NDE Engineer at Relativity Space, combining materials behavior, additive manufacturing (AM) fundamentals, and NDE/ material interactions to ensure structural integrity of large scale rocket structures. Work to develop and apply novel NDE approaches and quantify their detection limitations for AM components, aiming to qualify the material for application in fracture critical service. PhD - UCSB (Materials) under a NASA space technology research fellowship with Prof. Tresa Pollock and Prof. Samantha Daly. Studied the quantification of materials properties for AM alloys, connecting ultrasonic interrogations to microstructural and mechanical properties. Determined novel approach to determine both the crystallographic texture and single crystal elastic constants from printed AM components and demonstrated efficacy across material systems (Inconel 625, Ti64, SB-CoNi-10C). Applied neural networks (machine learning) for image recognition and inverse problem solving, demonstrating pitfalls and quantified error compared to classical inference.

Listed skills include Engineering, Autocad, Microsoft Office, Matlab, and 6 others.

Senior Nde Engineer, Additive Manufacturing

Current

Long Beach, California, United States

Work to conduct R&D and develop novel NDE approaches that surmount difficulties related to AM geometries, surfaces, and complexities. Apply cross-functional knowledge of AM microstructure/ property interactions and NDE technique physics to target applications for software automation, destructive testing, and machine learning. Develop qualification approaches for AM material, targeting fracture critical service requirements through quantification of detectability limits, material testing requirements, and defect criticality.

Aug 2023 - Present

Nde Engineer Ii

Long Beach, California, United States

Develop novel NDE approaches that account for AM geometries, surfaces, and complexities. Connect NDE technique physics to AM structure complexities and connect destructive testing data to non-destructive defect populations.

Nov 2022 - Aug 2023

Postdoctoral Researcher

Santa Barbara, California, United States

Perform research to advance the characterization of additively manufactured nickel, cobalt-nickel, and titanium components with minimal destructive examination. Apply machine learning (artificial, convolutional neural nets) to increase the computational speed of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy-inferred elastic constants and infer additional microstructural information from 3D tomography data.

Sep 2022 - Nov 2022

Phd Candidate - Pollock/Daly Research Groups

Conduct research to predict the microstructure, fabrication conditions, and consequent integrity of additively manufactured (AM) high temperature alloys using non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques. Resonance Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS) used to interrogate the texture and elasticity of AM components.

Nov 2019 - Sep 2022

Teaching Assistant

Santa Barbara, California, United States

Teaching Assistant for Materials 101: Structure and Properties course. Course involves basic materials science, atomic structure, mechanical properties, and phase diagrams. Responsible for 25 student discussion section (weekly)
