As an Allovus Design vendor, I serve the role of Excel specialist for Microsoft HackingSTEM. This a small team that designs and develops STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects especially targeting middle school students through next generation hardware, software, and services. Our goal is to support teachers building inquiry and project-based activities that embed computational and design thinking into existing middle school curriculum. We want to democratize STEM for learners to demonstrate how all schools can provide affordable opportunities to bring "making" and 21st-century technical skills into the classroom. This team travels domestically and internationally presenting and engaging educators and students with hands-on tools and free downloadable curriculum activities that empower youth through hands-on learning.As the Excel specialist for the team, I develop the Excel workbooks that incorporate both live experimental data and imported Big Data in a variety of STEM experiments. All our content needs to be easy-to-use for middle school students, so I create the dynamic dashboard experiences where users interact with incoming data. This involves using my skills and imagination to conceive of new methods of Excel visualization, utilizing tables, charts, formatting, complex formulas, and VBA to create a dynamic visual for the students, to see charts and visualizations change in front of their eyes as they manipulate their tools. My expertise in this has also led me to run trainings and develop tutorials on live data visualization techniques for both internal and external users.
