I also understand that those who start out in agate do not really want to stay there, they want to learn more. I encourage those to get involved in other areas of the newspaper sports industry, and as a result of hard work and knowledge, Jeff excelled as a writer and covered a variety of sports. He presence on our staff was vital to our success, and I highly recommend him for any position for which he applies. Not only is Jeff a dedicated worker, he is also a good person. We would disagree from time to time, but he listened to what I had to say and, when he found it prudent, changed his course of action based on my thoughts -- a rare, and welcome, humility. Third, Jeff never stops learning. To wit, his knowledge of business, after years at Triangle Business Journal, rivals his knowledge of basketball. And I'm pretty sure he knows more about basketball than anyone who covers the ACC for a living. Fourth: I know hundreds of journalists. Pulitzer winners, Pulitzer finalists, editors of large metro papers, overworked managing editors, and poor souls who work at Bloomberg. Jeff works as hard as any of them, perhaps harder. It is something of a cliche to say a professional is "committed to excellence," but Jeff really is. I cannot emphasize enough how strongly he has my highest recommendation."
