As the prior CEO of Payfactors I was constantly looking at people metrics like turnover, time-to-hire, employee engagement, revenue per employee, etc. The problem was always lack of context and understanding the interdependencies of various metrics. I could tell you what our turnover or employee engagement was for a certain period, function, or department, but I never knew how we compared to our peers/competitors (i.e., were we outperforming or underperforming our peers?) And I couldn’t tell you how critical CEO decisions (e.g., an acquisition, a new executive hire, a new work-from-home policy, taking on an outside financial partner, or a new compensation plan) were impacting our critical metrics.
