Worked as Professor Pamela Silver's site manager at the Wyss Institute on drug development and synthetic biology projects.

Managed the EMD-Lexigen patent portfolio. EMD-Lexigen was a subsidiary of EMD-Serono, focused on development of engineered fusion protein therapeutics.During this time I was project manager for an Fc-erythropoietin fusion protein that entered clinical trials.

This was a startup research institute in Berkeley California. While I was here I had a desk next to Drew Endy when he was a post-doc, first conceptualizing synthetic biology. I helped him articulate early proof-of-concept goals - cells that count, etc. I also conceptualized the use of targeted, weakly reactive small molecules as inhibitors of protein-protein interactions.

I drafted scientific manuscripts for the staff, who were almost all Asian. I wrote the FIP business plan - a draft document to help the company go public (never happened). I identified new drug development concepts. I was a project manager in a collaboration with Hoffmann-LaRoche on anti-cancer kinase inhibitors.

I worked on the nematode C. elegans and its nervous system development.

I worked in the lab of Pamela Silver, then an assistant professor and my future wife. This was a holding position until my lab space at Rutgers was renovated. More nematodes, some yeast.

I worked in the lab of Martin Chalfie, who did later win the Nobel Prize. I cloned and characterized the mec-3 gene, the first member of the LIM domain family of proteins.
