As Executive Director of the Genetics and Genomics Academy, I work collaboratively with the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs to advance graduate education across life-science disciplines, develop and promote interdisciplinary research programs, expand Genetics and Genomics knowledge for all undergraduate students, and enhance Genetics and Genomics outreach across the state of North Carolina. My research interests are focused on comparative immunology with an emphasis on understanding how immune systems recognize and destroy invading pathogens while leaving their own cells unscathed. Although my research spans all vertebrate lineages, my lab employs zebrafish, rodents, and human cells as models for discovery. My current research is focused on how genetic diversity and exposure to environmental chemicals impact immune function in all vertebrate species including humans.
