Midtown came into being officially in 1985 after a fire at Baxter Laundry, the space now known as Midtown Green. Residents galvanized around creating a much needed open space while, at the same time, opposing the proposal for high-density, apartment type housing desired by property owners of the laundry. Over the years Midtown has transitioned from an organized group of individuals meeting in private residences and using personal land lines for communication, to a recognized 501(c)(3) which has a mission of “uniting neighbors in a volunteer capacity, to build pride in the neighborhood, and create an attractive community in which to live, work, and play”. Midtown’s successes include meaningful impact in retaining the historic facade of Houseman Field Stadium, impact and advocacy alongside community partners in the rebuilding of the Fulton Street Cemetery wall along Fountain St., and, most recently, $3M in renovations to the Fulton Street Farmers Market aimed at improving the condition of this neighborhood and City of Grand Rapids asset.
