I have been a Senior Software Product Manager for 25 years. In this role, I speak with customers and prospects, prioritize both external and internal feature requests, define enhancements for new versions, and determine a release date. We have released new versions of the products on-time over 95% of the time, without excluding promised features.I am not a proponent of releasing a new product version whenever the version is ready. I believe that without a target, you cannot hit the bullseye. I feel it is vital to set a release date for each product version and do everything in my power to release on that date. This is important not only for marketing and sales, but most especially for customers and prospects. This produces an urgency for the team that makes us walk in lockstep.To me, this is a simple process that requires a few steps:1. Determine the features based upon need.2. Determine the amount of hours required to architect, design, develop, test, quality assurance, and document.3. Set a release date based upon the amount of effort required.At times, I have interjected new features during the development process that I felt were critical and knew were not invasive or would adversely affect the release date. However, I typically prefer to prevent feature creep to enter into the equation.During my tenure as a Product Manager, my products have been nominated for several awards and once won an award as best product in its category.
