“I’m a storyteller.” It’s a phrase many creative people use to describe themselves. But that phrase doesn’t quite fit me. I don’t just tell a story; I bring a story to life. I found my love for creating when I went to school for radio. Radio as a medium obviously has its limitations, but those limitations forced me to try original and interesting ideas. Having only my audience’s imagination to work with seemed daunting at first but ended up being an amazing opportunity. I could build huge worlds that were unique to each listener and create something truly amazing in under 30 seconds. After graduating, I took my knowledge of audio and charged head first into filmmaking. Filmmaking can be a monster with its own challenges. In a larger team, competing ideas and visions can create a “Frankenstein” of a final product, but a skilled editor can save it. Being an editor is more than just fitting the footage together; it’s knowing when to leave something on cutting room floor even if it’s a good shot. It’s also about knowing how to change the interpretation of a scene by adding something as subtle as a character’s glance. Whether editing a feature film, short video or an ad, the editor’s choices can make or break a project. So, is it my goal to tell people a story? No. It’s to give them an experience they’ll never forget.
