I am the Director for CSIRO Agriculture and Food. CSIRO is the national science agency of Australia. CSIRO Agriculture and Food delivers world-class research, innovation and commercialization for impact in the agriculture and food industries at national and international scales.The portfolio spans scientific advances and industry impact in areas of resilient food and fibre farming systems, future novel crops, high value protein industries, healthy foods, secure food systems, trusted supply chains and improved footprint for agrifood and agrifibre industries. I help to devise strategy and delivery for science that includes breakthrough disruptive science as well as science for industry-facing delivery. I have strong interest and prior experience in data science and digital innovation. My activities currently include leading multiple strategic activities in digital innovation and digital transformation.In my role as Deputy Director, I work to develop and support the capability and culture across CSIRO Agriculture and Food business, including working with a dynamic cohort of postdoctoral scientists and engineers. Prior to this role, I was the research director of the farming systems portfolio in CSIRO Agriculture and Food. This portfolio developed responses to the challenge of building resilient, profitable and environmentally sustainable farming systems. I joined CSIRO in 2008 where I led active research teams CSIRO engaged in national and international projects to develop science and technology in areas of crop genomics, genetics and agricultural field data science. I completed a Nuffield international study tour in 2016 to learn more about on-farm and supply chain delivery of data science innovation.I completed a PhD in medical genetics at the University of Queensland and then a postdoctoral position in statistics at the University of Oxford. I then lead a team in bioinformatics at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford where I was involved in large genomics projects and patented software for commercial release. In late 2008 I returned to Australia to lead the crop bioinformatics team and lead research in novel crop traits and agricultural genomics, informatics and bioinformatics.
