About Jennifer Genetti, Ms, Pg
I have over six years of experience working as a geologist in both the geoenvironmental and geotechnical field across California. The highlight of my experience has been focused performing Geotechnical Explorations and Geologic Hazards Evaluations, Underground Storage Tank (UST) Cleanup Site Investigations and Monitoring, Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, and helping clients maintain Stormwater Compliance. In addition, my technical skills include proficiency in ArcGIS with over 10 years of mapping experience. I received an M.S. in Geosciences from San Francisco State University and a B.S. in Earth and Planetary Science from University of California Santa Cruz. During my masters program I focused in Geomorphology under the guidance of Dr. Leonard Sklar studying landscape evolution in steep mountain catchments in the Eastern Sierras. I also worked as a graduate assistant and student assistant at SFSU, and a volunteer lab assistant at U.C. Berkley’s Richmond Field Station. During my time at UCSC I worked as a intern with the U.S. Geological Survey providing technical support for quantitative sample analysis by X- ray diffraction under the supervision of Dr. James Hein.Registrations and Certifications: - Professional Geologist (PG)- Qualified Stormwater Practitioner (QSP)- Certified Erosion Sediment and Stormwater Inspector (CESSWI)- Nuclear Gage Safety Training - OSHA 24 Hour HAZWOPER Training
Listed skills include Quantitative Analysis, Geomorphology, Field Work, Data Analysis, and 16 others.

Assistant Geologist
Graduate Student, Research Assistant
My emphasis is in geomorphology under the guidance of Dr. Leonard Sklar. My study provides evidence for variation of hillslope sediment size with elevation in the steep mountain catchment of Inyo Creek. My project was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Dawdy Hydrology Research Grant. My accomplishments include: ● Showcased methods and preliminary findings in poster presentation at the Fall 2014 American Geophysical Union conference● Showcased findings in poster presentation at the Fall 2015 American Geophysical Union conference● Co-author on "The problem of predicting the size distribution of sediment supplied by hillslopes to rivers" (2016) in the Journal of Geomorphology●Oral presentation of findings at the 2016 Geophysical Society of America Cordilleran Section - 112th Annual Meeting●Completion of Master's thesis and oral defense
Student Assistant
Worked to assist one semester of the coarse California Water (Spring, 2016), and one semester of the coarse Global Warming (Fall, 2016). Duties included:● Class participation● Guest lecturing● Grading● Preparing for exams and activities
Laboratory Technician
I assisted Gillenwater Consulting, LLC with a project conducting shoreline geomorphology monitoring for the Aramburu Island restoration project in Marin County. Gillenwater Consulting, LLC specializes in estuarine and coastal ecosystem science and restoration in the Bay Area. I processed beach material samples using an oven and a ro-tap sieve shaker which was provided by the Richmond Field Station. From the results I did an analysis to determine the particle size distribution and the median grain size.
Graduate Assistant
Worked as a graduate assistant under Dr. Leonard Sklar to collaborate in his development of the course California Water as a large class size of 250 students (Spring, 2015). Duties included:● Participation in weekly meetings to discuss and develop lectures● Holding weekly office hours ● Guest lecturing● Organizing classroom activities● Organizing and hosting "movie nights" to play California water related videos● Helping prepare exams● Grading
Volunteer Research Assistant
Technical support for quantitative sample analysis by X- ray diffraction (XRD) under the supervision of Dr. James Hein, accumulating 650 hours. Project 1: "Clay-mineral suites, sources and inferred dispersal routes in the San Francisco Bay"Using X-ray diffraction mineralogy to better understand the distribution, sources and dispersal pathways of suspended sediment in the San Francisco Bay. Mineral concentrations of smectite, illite and kaolinite plus chlorite in bayfloor and seabed samples were compared to mineral concentrations in surrounding rock types, tributaries and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River delta. Dispersal pathways were interpreted from the patterns found in the mineral concentrations of bayfloor and seabed samples. For this project I performed wet laboratory procedures for 73 samples collected from the San Francisco Bay floor. Procedures involved dissolving the carbonate and organic matter, separating the mud from the sand and silt using a centrifuge, and desiccating and glycolating each sample. I Ran the 73 samples in an x-ray diffraction machine and analyzed mineral concentrations using PANalytical HighScore. To identify the sources I organized and analyzed 72 rivers samples which were received from the USGS water resources department and 19 rock samples that were obtained from a previous study. To fill in missing data I worked in a field team to collect suspended sediment samples from tributaries flowing into San Francisco Bay after high flow events. I prepared tables and graphs in excel and created figures using ArcGIS.Project 2: "Critical metals in western Arctic Ocean ferromanganese mineral deposits"Worked alongside a technician sampling cross sections of the ocean crusts, processing the samples, and organizing the sample sheets. Co-author for AGU 2013 abstract: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2013AGUFMOS12B..06HAssisted additional projects: ● Rock sawing samples● Subsampling coral cores from Hawaii for a nitrogen study
Summer Field Intern
A. During the spring interns develop basic quantitative geospacial skills including: (1) Introduction to coordinate systems and projections, (2) Familiarity with ArcCatalogue, ArcMap, ArcScene and ArcPad, (3) Vector interpretations on raster data, (4) Map scale and coordinate system designation, legend generation, (5) Use of DEMs for both interpretation and quantitative analysis, (6) Landform Analysis; Basic Database operations, (7) Familiarity with Juno and linked Trimble GPS, (8) The ability to work with computer-generated images in fieldB. During a 10 day stay at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL), CA, interns write 3 reports related to field trips that investigate the regional geology of the eastern California Shear Zone. Field trips focused on: (1) The nature of active faulting and how it relates to tectonics, (2) Volcanism in Owens Valley to Mono Lake and how it relates to tectonics, (3) Solving specific problems raised by the image interpretation, (4) Integrating field observations with the general geologic history, (5) Using Trimble GPS in the field, (6) The ability to work with computer-generated images in fieldC. The third part of the internship is a 3-week intensive geological field camp performing geological mapping of the Poleta Fold Belt in the White Mountains, CA. Field work involved: (1) Topographic and geologic map analysis and construction, (2) Aerial photo interpretation, (3) Rock identification and interpretation, (4) A large stratigraphic section, (5) Petrology, (6) Geomorphic and geologic structure analysis involving 4 cross sections, (7) Geologic report writing.
