Along with fellow state and county apiary inspectors, I support the beekeeping industry and community in Utah. I ensure compliance with the Utah Bee Inspection Act by performing apiary inspections, mitigating regulated apiary diseases, educating beekeepers and the public, and running the in-house apiary diagnostic laboratory at UDAF. I also help out with invasive insect surveys as needed throughout each season.

I am currently investigating how honeybee colonies in rural areas of the Salt Lake Valley are impacted by mosquito abatement activities.

Course taught: Insect Biology and Diversity (ENT3010/3011) Fall 2019 & Fall 2020 • Designed and instructed laboratory sessions on insect morphology, internal anatomy, and resin casting preservation techniques • Curated a comprehensive teaching collection of >100 insect families • Instructed students in proper insect curation techniques • Graded lab exams, insect collection projects and written assignments • Initiated contact with non-university collaborators at a local maker-space

Unlocking the genetic potential of frozen grasshoppers Clemson University & USDA-APHIS-PPQ • Tested and refined pinning techniques for cryo-preserved Orthopteran specimens • Performed manual and robot-assisted DNA extractions and PCRs on cryo-preserved specimens • Evaluated the efficacy of standard laboratory methods/materials in genomic research of frozen, desiccated Orthopteran specimens • Reviewed, formulated, and tested various laboratory methods to optimize DNA extraction, amplification, and purification

Bee Biodiversity in Eco-diverse hotspots • Composed a review of current literature on native bee distributions in the south- eastern United States• Compiled a checklist of Piedmont bees based on CUAC specimens and GBIF data• Consulted with SC Botanical Garden staff and pollinator ecology experts to design effective and credible bee bowl sampling methods• Conducted an independent study to gauge bee biodiversity in the South Carolina Botanical Gardens• Presented findings at the 2019 Entomological Society of America annual meeting in St. Louis

• Developed a GIS application to track the spread of the muhly grass mealybug (Muhlenbergia capillaris) with crowdsourced occurrence data of the pest • Designed distribution heat maps for problematic scale insect species • Reviewed and summarized the life history literature for 35 scale insect species • Organized >800 scale insect photographs and extracted metadata for upload to BugWood
