This opportunity gave me the ability to travel to Africa and have an impactful cross-cultural experience in a very different setting from Australia and the western realities I grew up in. The organisation worked in two disadvantaged and impoverished communities. I helped run kids after-school programs 6 days a week. This included a breakfast program and a soup kitchen. This work experience played out amidst the covid pandemic which presented many unique challenges. I am very grateful for my time in Africa which gave me a broader lens to societal issues, culture, hardships and diversity. I believe this is one of the seasons of my life in which I was challenged and grew in understanding, resilience and grit.
