Mental health counselors are qualified professionals who specialize in psychotherapy and intervention methods to help people living with mental health challenges. Their duties are not limited to managing psychiatric disorders, as they also assist those with emotional distress and addiction disorders. As a mental health counselor, it is necessary to be able to conduct preliminary interviews and document on cases from the initial consultation to the end of treatment. This documentation requires the counselor to evaluate a clients' mental, behavioral, and emotional health while developing appropriate interventions and recovery plans for individuals, couples, families, and groups. It is also a requirement to actively facilitate individual and group therapy sessions. Counselors must monitor progress throughout the treatment plan and be available to collaborate on intervention plans with other mental health specialists, doctors, nurses, and social workers. Follow up with psychiatrists and attending treatment planning with physicians for clients can be crucial to the clients’ overall outcome. By identifying and preventing behaviors that impede recovery counselors can assist clients in positive therapeutic autonomy as well as assisting family members and primary caregivers to manage mental behavioral challenges away from treatment.
