I am fascinated by how the human body works and have a strong passion for helping others. I am in the process of determining a career path that allows me to pursue both of these things. Currently, my interests lie in biotechnology, drug discovery, genetics, molecular biology, nutrition, and precision medicine/translational science. I am interested in using research to help find cures/treatments for diseases as a way to combine my love of science and my value of helping others. I started out working in a breast cancer research lab in the Graduate Department of Pharmacology as a freshman at Case. I have also gained experience in the industry setting at Ionis Pharmaceuticals and Regeneron. This has given me exposure to both antisense oligonucleotide and monoclonal antibody drug discovery processes/technology. I loved my experiences in industry because you can see the things you discover in a lab setting be translated into a human and the impact that you can have on the course of someones life is truly amazing to me. I have also seen the impact that new genetic breakthroughs have had on the drug discovery process and believe that using the human genome to find targets for therapies or as a therapy itself is the future of medicine. I have also started to develop an interest in molecular nutrition and metabolism. Through my coursework at Case I see a strong connection between the fields of nutrition and biochemistry. A persons genome is just a marker for potential risk for a disease, but this risk does not need to become a reality. Overall, I think precision medicine and finding out populations that will benefit from certain therapies whether it is drugs or nutrition is important for the future.

Associate Research ScientistHarrington Discovery Institute At University Hospitals Sep 2018 - PresentCleveland/Akron, Ohio AreaInvestigating the mechanism of the hormone Asprosin, which was recently discovered in this lab, under the direction of Dr. Atul Chopra. -
Protein Therapeutics Summer InternRegeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Jun 2018 - Aug 2018Tarrytown NyAs an intern in the Hybridoma Group within the Protein Therapeutics Department at Regeneron, I worked on a technology development project to increase the efficiency of hybridoma fusion. Presented findings at end of summer Intern Poster Session. This experience exposed me to "biologic" drug discovery through the lens of a technology development project. It also gave me more industry experience. Lab techniques: Cell culture, hybridoma electrofusion, high throughput ELISA screening. -
Student Researcher- Cwru Graduate Department Of PharmacologyCase Western Reserve University Jan 2016 - Jun 2018Cleveland/Akron, Ohio AreaInvestigated the mechanism in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR'pathway behind the observed decrease in Akt production and tumor growth seen when the breast cancer drugs Rapamycin (mTOR inhibitor) and defactinib (FAK inhibitor) are combined in breast cancer cell lines and in mice under the direction of Dr. Ruth Keri. Independent project determining the role of autophagy/cell death pathways by which this drug combination works. Member of the Journal Club: critically review scientific papers.Presented findings at CWRU Research ShowCase Spring 2018 and at Capstone Presentation April 2019.Doing research in this lab for almost 3 years has allowed me to dive deeply into a specific project. I have learned to be an independent researcher and take initiative. I recognized a connection between my internship at Ionis and the project I was working on here and was given the opportunity to explore this connection further as an independent project for a semester. Lab techniques: Cell culture, cell drug treatment, protein harvest, western blot, fluorescent staining/imaging, basic microscopy, RNA analysis, PCR. -
Drug Discovery InternIonis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Jun 2017 - Aug 2017Greater San Diego AreaInvestigated the use of Antisense Oligonucleotides to clear defective mitochondria by inducing Parkin/Pink1 mitophagy under the direction of Dr. Andy Powers. Specifically working to inhibit deubiquitinase activity. Presented findings at an end of summer intern symposium. This experience made me realize the impact genetics/RNA expression can have on novel therapeutics. I was able to see first hand the impact and efficiency of the antisense oligonucleotide platform. It also exposed me to the industry environment. Lab Techniques: Mouse techniques including subcutaneous drug injections and tissue processing, RNA extraction/purification, RT-PCR, electroporation, western blot, immunofluorescence. -
Intern- Mycobacterial MatingWadsworth Center May 2016 - Aug 2016Albany, New York AreaInvestigated the mechanism behind the recently discovered conjugation system in Mycobacteria called Distributed Conjugal Transfer under the direction of Dr. Todd Gray. Presented findings at an end of summer intern symposium.Lab Techniques: Bacteria culture, gene knockout, gene complementation, Mycobacterium recombineering, gel extraction, DNA mini-prep, transformation of plasmids into e-coli, PCR amplification, colony PCR, ligation reactions, primer design, electroporation, Mycobacterial matings, Dendra fluorescent imaging. This experience began my interest in molecular biology. I was able to create knockout bacterial strains and complement genes back into these strains. These became valuable tools for exploring the effects of certain components in the mating process. -
