I design, edit, produce, and publish a wide variety of content types. I edited and produced a wide variety of data-driven content for O’Reilly’s online platform, including articles, podcasts, deep-dive reports, PR content, and marketing project work. I also conducted on-camera interviews with some of the world's forefront scientists and innovators working to solve the world's problems.I focused on producing content -- in whatever form that took -- that communicated and reinforced O'Reilly's brand and its mission to support the work of innovators and to work on stuff that matters. I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the work, producing 1-3 podcasts every other week (including hosting and producing the Radar Podcast for a while), 2-3 deep dive reports each quarter, 3-5 supporting articles for each of our 7-10 conferences each year, and other blog posts and articles that would come in or be needed to support marketing efforts.In addition to on-camera interviews, I had an opportunity to get behind the camera while attending a weeklong documentary bootcamp at MassArt in Boston. I planned, shot, and edited a video of a metalsmithing student discussing her work. It might have been the most fun I've ever had. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to continue that sort of work in this position -- I would welcome the opportunity in the future. I've attached the final product to this experience entry.

I edited and designed a variety of content forms for O'Reilly's online platform. This position also introduced me to the world of on-camera interviewing, and it provided a rich ecosystem for building out a network for content development.

I launched and managed the Times Herald digital data desk and managed a team of data specialists. I developed and managed data projects; edited, updated, managed, and monitored website content; contributed a weekly entertainment column; wrote an entertainment blog; copyedited special sections; and completed story, video and photo shooting assignments. • Created and maintained a variety of informational databases directly relevant and useful to readers' lives (calendars, directories, restaurants, real estate, news of public record, prep sports statistics, etc.) for the Web site.• Proactively and aggressively gathered information from community sources. • Shot photos and video coverage of events to illustrate blogs, columns and stories. • Supervised library, archiving and research operations. • Administered ongoing data collection processes and develop systems to import and access data. • Coordinated the strategic deployment of hyper-local information. • Supervised data specialists, assigned work schedules, vacations and wrote reviews.

I taught one 3-credit English class each semester, with about 20-25 students. I developed lesson plans, exams, and lectures. I pursued this experience to become more comfortable speaking and presenting in front of groups.

I successfully launched and managed a new magazine division for the newspaper, including magazine conception, creation, editorial development, advertising sales, publication, budgets, and circulation. I worked within the community to market and promote our products, and conducted and analyzed market studies to identify market gaps for advertisers and readers. I especially enjoyed developing story budgets and planning editions with the team of freelance designers, photographers, and writers that I assembled.

I was responsible for every aspect of newspaper production, including budget management, finance and purchasing control, expense forecasting and budget estimates, production schedules, project planning and management. I successfully managed six departments and more than 100 employees.During this time, I continued to collaborate with the USA Today arm of Gannett and wrote a capital project to upgrade the computer-to-plate technology. Once approved, I managed the implementation of the project in Port Huron and wrote guidelines for implementation in sites across the country. I also assisted USA Today corporate in a national quality fingerprinting initiative, managing the project in Port Huron and traveling to 10 sites across the country to manage testing.

Responsible for production quality coordination and training at a joint-operating site.• Worked with the Pulitzer newspaper, The Arizona Daily Star, on a quality initiative to standardize output settings in Quark and PhotoShop, screen-line values and half-tone separation settings.• Controlled newsprint inventory, managing two warehouses and the electronic usage tracking system.• Coordinated production quality between news, pre-press and press departments.• Trained apprentice and journeyman crews on quality standards and techniques.• Evaluated consumable and material quality for site acceptance.• Developed a set of quality standards and training guidelines for pre-press and press departments.

I was responsible for all aspects of USA Today International production at their Frankfurt location. I assisted in the original launch of the site, and continued to manage daily production and printing. As my first job out of college, this position made good use of my English and German degrees, and gave me invaluable project management experience. I enjoyed working with a global team of diverse people and successfully collaborating across a variety of cultures and languages.

I developed and executed documentation for a startup company's initial software release.
