John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, Sun Valley, CABackgroundThis was a full-time teaching position to instructing a diverse range of learners in a large urban setting. Polytechnic High is a Title 1 high school with a high percentage of English language learners. Polytechnic has made significant academic progress between 2003 to 2013, including one of three schools to “exit” out of Program Improvement status as evidenced in rising CST (STAR) test scores, including student scores in World and US history.Accomplishments• Increased Advanced and Proficient CST scores from 36% to 40% between 2010 and 2012.• Rebuilt Polytechnic’s AP US history program in 2005 growing it from 10 to over 50 students. • Scores for the AP exam went from 0% passage in 2004 to 45% scoring a “3” or higher since 2006. • Collaborated with other United States history teachers to create CST aligned curriculum, exams, quizzes, and writing assignments. Implemented standards-based instruction into all courses taught. • Collaborated with parents, teachers, and counselors to help reluctant learners engage in the curriculum. Used ConnectED software and email to keep parents up to date on student achievement and behavior.• Acquired proficiency in educational software including ConnectED, Data Director, and EZ Grade Pro.
