About Jefferson Estela

Jefferson Estela is a queer Filipino intersectional environmentalist, climate justice and youth activist, community organizer, and freelance architectural designer. Born in the Philippines, he is passionate about storytelling, design, and ecology, which he skillfully integrates through research, organizing, and activism. His work revolves around climate justice, loss and damage, and climate-resilient communities.He co-founded Youth Strike 4 Climate Philippines (YS4C PH), one of the pioneering youth-led climate movements in the country, focused on humanizing climate action through activism and storytelling. He is a Member of the Steering Committee of Loss and Damage Youth Coalition for East and Southeast Asia, an international coalition of youth from the Global North and South advocating for action to address the loss and damage caused by the climate crisis. He is the Founding Convenor of Ilog Pasiglahin (Revitalize Pasig River), a multisectoral campaign advocating for the genuine and inclusive rehabilitation of the Pasig River in the Philippines. In addition to his multi-hyphenate roles, he is conducting research on the intersection of climate migration and cultural loss as part of his role as a Youth Advisory Board Member of the Global Youth Storytelling and Research Lab at Penn State University in the U.S.Currently, he is the Ocean, Coastal Communities, and Climate Campaigner of the Center of Energy, Ecology, and Development, a think-do institution that conducts research, advocates for policy change, and partners with communities for people-centered development in the Philippines. He studied Architecture at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manila, with a specialization in Bamboo Architecture and focus on sustainable design. In 2021, Greenpeace Philippines recognized him as one of five young Filipinos making waves in climate and environmental justice and this young leader only hopes for a just, greener, and more livable world for all.
