I am part of NIHR's leadership team. I have senior responsibility for our involvement of patients and the public in research. I am also responsible for disseminating evidence, including through publication of plain language research summaries on the NIHR Evidence website.

National Voices is a national charity umbrella, advocating for person centred care, action on health inequalities and a stronger voice for patients, citizens and the the voluntary sector. I helped put National Voices on the map as a key player in health and care policy, which it has continued to be under the excellent leadership of my successors Charlotte Augst and Jacob Lant. I was recognised from 2011 to 2018 by Health Service Journal in their annual list of 100 most influential people in health. I was awarded OBE in 2019 for services to health and care charities.

East London

Groundwork is a charity federation serving poorer areas through community development, environmental regeneration and employability training. Groundwork East London was a £1.5 m turnover organisation with 20 staff. I oversaw a portfolio of projects and played a pivotal role in the absorption of the charity into a single Groundwork for London.

As a civil servant, promoted to the senior civil service in 2003, I supported the Blair/Brown governments in their public service reform and efficiency agendas, which included work on the relocation of 20,000 civil servants out of London and the reform of higher education funding.

Edinburgh And London

The Scottish Office was the UK Government’s department for Scottish affairs before devolution. Among a variety of postings, I secured inward investment to Scotland as head of London office of “Locate in Scotland” and ran the office of the permanent secretary.
