How can we historically define the concept of Europe? What does it mean to be European, and how can we retrace the roots of this identity into the past? In the past weeks, I got the opportunity to reflect on this question with a group of international students in my position as teaching assistent in the summer school 'The Making of Europe', organised by Utrecht University. During this two-week course, I worked closely with the course coordinator to ensure the smooth running of the program. I coordinated my own seminar groups and assisted in leading the various excursions that were part of the course curriculum. I also helped with grading the exams, and overseeing the assignments. It was a great pleasure to be a part of this effort, and I would to express my gratitude to course coordinator Jelle Lammerts van Bueren for his steady organisational hand and the pleasant cooperation in these two weeks. Of course I would also like to thank all the students for their enthusiastic participation in the course, and the many thought-provoking discussions we had during the seminar groups.

Met mijn goede vriend en journalist Tom Veldhuijzen maak ik sinds korte tijd een podcast over het tragische, maar intrigerende verhaal van de RMS Titanic. In deze serie bespreken wij de meest interessante en aangrijpende verhalen over de tijd waarin het schip werd gebouwd, over de technologische innovaties die het schip te bieden had aan haar passagiers, en natuurlijk vertellen wij over die laatste droevige nacht. Het werk voor dit project heeft mij veel nieuwe ervaringen gebracht en mij geleerd om met mijn kennis als historicus verhalen uit het verleden naar een groter publiek te brengen.De podcast wist vele luisteraars te bereiken, en leidde ook tot een interview in Veronica Superguide en een radiointerview met Astrid de Jong bij Volgspot op Radio 5.

Als lid van het Audit Committee bleef ik betrokken bij het bestuur van de vereniging, voornamelijk in een adviserende rol.

Tussen oktober 2020 en augustus 2022 werkte ik als kassamedewerker bij het filiaal van de Jumbo aan de Stephensonlaan in Hilversum. Hier leerde ik, naast de technische elementen van het vak, ook werken met een hoge mate van klantgerichtheid. De winkel had een kleine maar trouwe klantenkring, en de service die wij hen konden bieden was dan ook vaak erg persoonlijk en vertrouwd. In de laatste maanden werden mij meerdere nieuwe taken toebedeeld. Zo kreeg ik vaak leiding over de kassa-afdeling en deed ik meerdere malen per week de kasopmaak. Ik kreeg toegang tot de kluis en deed bankstortingen namens het filiaal.

In the academic year 2021-2022, I combined my bachelor with a board year by joining the board of CS Ubuntu. This association, which has around 100 members, commits to the organisation of academic events centred around the topic of Conflict Studies and Human Rights. These events include lectures, panels and documentary watchings. In my role as secretary, I was responsible for maintaining the connection between the board and the members of the association. At the same time I represented the Lecture Committee, which reached out to academic speakers and professionals in the field, and assisted them in giving interesting presentations for our members. In the winter, I took over as chair of the board for three months, stepping in for the absence of the original president. During this time, I wrote a plan for the restructuring of the association in order to make it more durable in the future. This included measures to make the association more efficient. The current board still makes use of this plan.
