About Jesse Simpson
Hi, and thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about me!I enrolled in the Civil Engineering program at the University of Memphis in 2012, and I knew I was in the right place from the very first lecture. Engineering is all about solving problems that we have never seen before, and that excites me. I love to approach new problems, break them down to their components, and then figure out how to put everything together to make it work. I have always been able to find something new to learn in every engineering project I have worked on. The variety that engineering provides ensures that I can never grow complacent, because there is always something more to discover.Throughout my time at the University of Memphis, I have had the opportunity to experience both practical and academic engineering projects. My first real taste of engineering work was during my Senior Design class in 2016, where my group was assigned a new construction project for a local school. While it was only an exercise for my group, we were able to put together a comprehensive plan for the construction, including storm-water retention, traffic changes, and the new building itself. We presented our plan to the engineering firm that was overseeing the real construction, and we received very positive feedback. It was a difficult task, but I found the work to be extremely rewarding, and I learned a great deal from the project. As I moved into my graduate studies, I began to focus on autonomous vehicles. My specialization was in transportation engineering, and autonomous vehicles are almost certainly the future of transportation. I focused on merging the field of freight transportation with autonomous vehicles, since my professors were experts in freight transportation and few people were exploring the potential of autonomous heavy-duty trucks. My work led to multiple publications in scholarly journals and several presentations at national conferences. Not only did I learn a great deal from the work itself, but I also learned how to network and market my work. Now that I have finished the Ph.D. program, I look forward to the opportunities that future jobs will hold. I am eager to learn more about the practical side of engineering to complement my experience with academia.I can’t wait to see what you and I can learn together!
