About Jesse Wilson

I am currently an Instructor of Natural Sciences at the University of Oregon with Clark Honors College where I teach, mentor, and conduct service. I previously taught at UCSD, CSU San Marcos, and UC Merced. I love teaching and I have developed and taught a wide array of courses related to Earth Science, Environmental Science, and Biology.I am also a researcher. My graduate and post-doc research involved assessing water quality and I designed experiments to understand how the physical environment, natural ecology, and human activities interact to create the conditions observed. This involved time-series and spatial monitoring for field sites all over the world. I've worked in streams, intertidal zones, and nearshore locations throughout California, oligotrophic regions throughout the Pacific, the oxygen minimum zone off the coast of Mexico, the marine lakes of Palau, the Alaskan bush, and dam sites throughout New England. While my primary job is currently teaching, I still collaborate, process data, write, and publish research articles.

I assessed the drivers and functional impacts of different microbial community types in nearshore Southern California. I did this by measuring primary production, community respiration, microbial taxa, and cell counts (via a flow cytometer) through frequent sampling and by maintaining several autonomous samplers off the Scripps pier (including a membrane-inlet mass spectrometer).I also used past time-series to assess environmental and ecological drivers of phytoplankton and microbial… Show more I assessed the drivers and functional impacts of different microbial community types in nearshore Southern California. I collected samples and environmental data in the field, created mesocosms to study the effect of nutrient and oxygen concentrations on microbes and microbial activities, extracted DNA from water samples and from mucus taken from migrating salmon, quantified genes and microbial taxa, measured and analyzed nutrients, analyzed sequence data, modeled data using many techniques including network analysis, and mentored undergraduate and fellow graduate students. During this time, I took on a leadership role where I mentored undergraduates and fellow graduate students in the lab and field, organized and led several research trips to Palau, and served as a co-chief scientist for a research cruise off the coast of Mexico. As a teacher I taught classes in Environmental Microbiology (as the instructor of record), General Microbiology (as the instructor of record), Marine Science (as TA), Earth System Science (as TA), Ecosystems of California (as TA), Conservation Biology (as a TA), Biological Statistics (as a TA), and an Introductory Biology Lab (as a TA) and served as a course content developer for an Introductory Earth System Science Course. I also undertook an Assessment as Pedagogy and Planning Project in which I improved undergraduate test performance and perceived learning in an introductory marine science course by creating a community based inquiry environment. Finally, in 2016 I was awarded the School of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award.
