Uva Center For Global Health Student Advisory Board Member
Through the UVA Center for Global Health, I have partaken in organizing UVA's pilot Global Health Week, which had movie screenings, art exhibits, and guest speakers focusing on major themes in global health (i.e. clean water, mental health, maternal and child health, etc.). As part of the CGH Student Advisory Board, I honed my organizational skills by helping start up a novel Global Health Journal Club that drew students from the medical school, business school, nursing school, law school, engineering school, and the college. The diverse perspectives represented always led to lively debate and enrichment for all, reminding me of the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of global health.
End7 Student Advisory Board Member
From lymphatic filariasis, which swells up victims' limbs into elephantine proportions, to hookworm, which slashes the wage-earning potential of children by 40%, the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are debilitating conditions that can be treated for just fifty cents. During my junior year of high school, I brought attention to this cause through giving talks, inviting guest speakers, and founding a club. In college, I have maintained this interest by serving as a two-time member of the END7 SAB. Last year, I organized outdoor yoga sessions to bring attention to the soil-transmitted helminths and designed an obstacle course to place participants in the shoes of those suffering from NTDs.
Global Public Health Brigade Chapter President
As a senior in high school, I led my first brigade to Panama in January of 2012. During that trip, I fell in love with Latin America and with the holistic, cooperative mission of Global Brigades. I went on a Global Public Health Brigade as a freshman, and served as President for the following two years, raising enough money to go to Honduras every winter break. During my time as President, we quadrupled our number of volunteers by revamping our recruitment efforts and improved communication within the leadership team. We also managed to fundraise over $15,000 to help make the trips more affordable for our brigaders, and we have better established our name and presence on campus.
Globemed Chapter Co-President
GlobeMed at UVA partners with the Build Your Future Today (BFT) Center in Siem Reap, Cambodia. In 2014, I served as Co-President and spearheaded our fundraising and recruitment efforts. In my three years of involvement, I have helped my chapter raise over $16,500 to go towards health and nutrition programs for mothers and children in Arak Svay, a rural Cambodian village. Last summer, I received a scholarship of $8000.00 from the UVA Center for Global Health to fund our 5-week internship to Cambodia, which I planned and organized as Trip Coordinator. As Director of Communications the year prior to that, I designed visuals, edited promotional videos, and managed our website and social media.
Igem Biotech Researcher
As part of the 13-member UVA synthetic biology team, I proposed an idea for minicells that we adopted as our official project for the iGEM competition. Anucleoid products of asymmetrical cell division, minicells can be used to deliver chemotherapeutics. By overexpressing the tubulin-analog FtsZ protein in E. coli, we created a gene construct that could induce minicell formation. Elected as one of the three official presenters, I had the honor and responsibility of representing our team at the competition. We raised over $50,000, won a Gold Medal and a trophy at the North America Regionals and qualified to compete at the World Jamboree. We published our results in Spectra this year.
