About Jessica Marriott

I’m a 24 year old who has always had a passion for helping & supporting people & going the extra mile.As part of my career journey I’ve held a range of roles in the youth & community sectors. I’m a trained in Level 2 and 3 youth work. I have also been to University & studied a level 4 in Social Welfare Advice & Guidance. 2016-2018, I was an elected member of the UK Youth Parliament (MYP). I believe this to be one of my biggest achievements. As part of my responsibility I met with MPs and local councillors, organised events, ran campaigns, made speeches, held debates, & ensured the views of young people in Norfolk were listened to by decision makers and Government. I was a member of the Youth Advisory Board in 2018. The YAB is a board of young people who live & study in the local area of Norfolk. As a member of the board it was my responsibility to talk to other like-minded young people about the issues that matter to them and how they would like to see things changed. After receiving feedback from young people we would then take action through campaigning, lobbying, advocacy, hosting events and commissioning services. I had the opportunity to work with adult professionals in the local community to ensure that young people have a say in decisions that affect them and that they see the change they wish to see.In 2018, I became a trainee youth support worker for Prospects. Within my role as a support worker I worked closely with young people to help raise their aspirations, whilst boosting their self-esteem & self-worth. I supported & guided young people in their personal, social & educational development to help them succeed in life. I supported young people to engage in positive & sustainable activities & education by signposting them to and linking in with the relevant agencies & organisations that hold and run the activities young people are interested in. The overall aim was to help young people break down the barriers they are up against & build their resilience by supporting them to engage in mainstream services and provision; to enable young people to reach their full potential.Currently, I’m a youth Ambassador for YMCA England & Wales. As an ambassador I have a range of opportunities available to me & I have the chance to amplify the voices of young people across influential platforms. I act as a spokesperson for YMCA England & Wales, and get the opportunity to meet with and influence key decision makers, including MPs, to represent the issues that are important to me, my peers, and YMCA Norfolk.

Trainee Youth Support Worker

Norfolk, England, United Kingdom

Prospects Youth Service is a service which is run by Shaw Trust designed for young people in Norfolk who are at risk of harm in and outside of the family home, disengagement from education and services and unemployment. Within my role as a support worker I worked closely with young people to help raise their aspirations, whilst boosting their self-esteem and self-worth. I supported and guided young people, aged 13-19, in their personal, social and educational development to help them succeed in life. The young people I supported are those who are at risk of statutory intervention and have very different backgrounds ranging from (CSE) Child Sexual Exploitation, (CCE) Child Criminal Exploitation and anti-social behaviour to having bad anxiety and depression. I supported young people by attending youth work activities with them, this may be on a 1:1 level or in a group setting. The overall aim was to help young people break down the barriers they are up against and build their resilience by supporting them to engage in mainstream services and provision; to enable young people to reach their full potential.

The period from when I left school in 2016 to around 2018 I was a member of the Youth Advisory Board, which at the time was being run by The Benjamin Foundation. The Youth Advisory Board is a board of young people who live and study in the local area, at the time mine being. As a member of the board it was my responsibility to talk to other like-minded young people about the issues that matter to them and how they would like to see things changed. After receiving feedback from young people we would them take action through campaigning, lobbying, advocacy, hosting events and commissioning services. I had the opportunity to work with adult professionals in the local community to ensure that young people have a say in decisions that affect them and that they see the change they wish to see.

Sep 2016 - Sep 2018

Member Of Youth Parliament

Norfolk, England, United Kingdom

From 2016 to 2018 I was an elected member of the UK Youth Parliament (MYP). As part of my responsibility in office my responsibilities involved meeting with MPs and local councillors, organise events, run campaigns, make speeches, hold debates, and ensure the views of young people in Norfolk were listened to by decision makers and Government. The UK Youth Parliament has a Manifesto, created by MYP's, which is approved every year at the Annual Sitting. MYPs are then balloted to choose a shortlist of campaigns from the Manifesto that is put to the public ‘youth’ vote to determine what we should debate in a House of Commons sitting to decide our national campaign. The most challenging part of being an MYP was to take on board so many topics effecting young people from public transport to education for life, and to actually get them listened to and I pushed through this obstacle by throwing myself forward and pushing myself to publicly debate on a local scale and in the House of Commons.
