I used to think the path to happiness was a straight line. So long as I checked off everything on the list in the right order, then my adult life would turn out just as it should for people who follow the rules. I’m a good rule follower, so I felt pretty confident I had this in the bag.Boy, was I wrong.Oh, I checked off many of the things. I went to a small liberal arts college in southwestern Virginia and earned a B.A. with concentrations in French and Russian. From there, I went on to a larger public university and collected a Master’s degree in teaching. Higher education: check.I started a career in teaching and got married a couple of summers later (because the summer is when teachers are supposed to get married). Career: check. Committed partnership: check.My husband (at the time) finished graduate school, and we bought our first home together in the midwestern city where he was beginning his career in higher education. Beautiful home where I could have a family: check.See? Straight line to happy town.Not quite. Most couples don't believe their marriages will end in divorce, but nearly half of them do. Mine was one of them. Like most people, we worked hard to check off all the things, but we failed to make our relationship the highest priority. Since my divorce, I've gone back to school and earned my credentialing as a certified professional coach. I teach couples strategies to reduce conflict and strengthen their connection so they can experience less frustration and more joy in their everyday lives.
