In the 19th Century, Napoleon III hosted a banquet for the king of Siam. The honored guests were rewarded with aluminum cutlery, while the rest had to make due with gold. A time in which aluminum was worth more than gold, despite its greater abundance in the earth’s crust. It was not until the discovery of electrolysis and chemical extraction, which allowed aluminum to become ubiquitous and thus cheaply available to the population. On a linear time scale of human history, curiosity and discovery of the natural world has led to exponential growth of our civilization. In the past 100 years, the cost of food, water, transportation, and goods has decreased by 100 fold and the cost of communication by 1000 fold. History has shown us that science and technological innovation is a very natural part of our humanity.
