In 2007 I joined a volunteer effort to improve technology in South African schools. The group had installed over six hundred donated Apple computers in over twenty schools in the Endumeni School District. The group had installed over six hundred donated Apple computers in over twenty schools in the Endumeni School District. I assisted with maintenance and training.In 2010 I branched out to provide support for the increasing number of Windows machines that were showing up in schools. On the technology side this involved hardware repair, software installation, configuration, and virus removal. On the human side this involved building relationships with teachers, administrators, and students, learning their needs and desires, providing training, and working together to achieve common goals.Through my time there I have set up modern computer networks in four high schools to allow file sharing, network printing, and internet access. I have installed extensive educational materials, including Khan Academy videos, offline Wikipedia, and assorted educational software. I have provided training for teachers and administrators, and have taught high school level computer classes for both novice and advanced users. I wrote a customizable computer game for reviewing math lessons.I wrote and illustrated the world's first Zulu/English comic book to encourage youth reading.I manage ongoing relationships with a hand-selected group of disadvantaged university students, providing them with laptop computers, financial assistance, encouragement, and guidance.Starting in 2013 I started volunteering extensively with the RACHEL project which created low-cost WiFi libraries for remote areas. I was the first software developer at Zappos.com when I was hired. I inherited a well-made contractor-built system and took it from there. Over the years I did too many things to remember: architecture, coding, hiring, and managing a team of 16 developers.With my technology leadership the company saw growth from just about nothing to over 500 million dollars in yearly sales. We oversaw the design, construction, and successful launch of a $25M, 400K sqft state-of-the-art distribution center in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. While at Payme I helped design the original database schema, object abstraction layer, and front end scripts. The company was acquired by PayMyBills.com.

Maintained the LinkExchange account control center and administration tools, comprised of hundreds of scripts, and used by hundreds of thousands of people. Also worked as part of a team on an ill-fated project to rewrite the BannerNetwork account control center. It eventually launched, but I learned a lot about what not to do in the process. I turned that knowledge around and rewrote the FastCounter control center in a weekend.

Telepresence was a computer animation and video production startup. Using Lightwave 3D and the Video Toaster we produced a demo reel that was nominated for a New England Emmy in graphic design. I produced about one third of the animated content for the reel and provided original music.We also provided video effects shots for other local production houses and produced some commercials and corporate videos.
