I am a graduate from the honors college at the University of North Texas with a major in Electrical Engineering. I also complete two minors in Math, and Business Foundations with an MBA preparation track. Growing up, the only engineers I knew were my uncles. Every time I saw them, they told me, “You’re good at computers and you fix things like us, you should be an engineer.” Overtime, I kept hearing the word “engineer” being thrown around when I had to start thinking about my future. It wasn’t until 6th grade when the word finally stuck. My science teacher pulled me aside one day and said, “I noticed you’re doing very well in science and math, there’s a summer engineering program called PREP and I think it would be perfect for you.” PREP stands for the Prefreshman Engineering Program and I attended the program for three years. PREP introduced me to the basics of engineering through hands-on activities, research projects, and field trips to different companies across Texas. After testing out different engineering fields, building multiple circuits, and programming various LEGO Mindstorms, I decided I wanted to get more into Electrical Engineering.The summer of 2018, I attended a selective internship program at Southwest Research Institute called the Young Engineers and Scientist Summer Internship Program (YES Program). They only accepted thirteen high school students in the San Antonio area for the internship, and at the end of the program each of us had to research and present our field of interest to the company. My field of interest was improving energy storage using graphene supercapacitors.Through the YES Program, I was able to see what a job as an electrical engineer entails, and I was able to strengthen my programming, soldering, and communication skills. Since the internship, I came to realize I wanted to major in Electrical Engineering. I also want to start my own engineering company with a STEM based program for children with and without special needs to help inspire the future generations like PREP and the YES program did for me growing up.
