About James Thomas

Reader, I pivoted. I started programming as a hobby, a creative outlet while pursuing an unrelated PhD. This soon became an all-consuming obsession. I've finally found the answer to the question, "what do you want to do when you grow up?".This realisation unleashed an intense period of self-taught programming, drawing on all the learning skills developed during my academic experience. My first language was Python. I began with simple games, but soon moved on to web-based projects, using Flask. Eager to learn more, I turned to other languages, for perspectives Python could not offer. I did projects in C and assembly language for a glimpse into lower level code. I worked in Java to explore object-oriented programming, and Haskell to get a taste for the functional approach.I have now completed an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. Aside from its creative aspect, I was attracted to programming for the same reason I had been attracted to the academic world: the challenge of continuous, lifelong learning.
