Profile bio

About Jack Harkins

I am a recent graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, where I earned a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering summa cum laude. I am interested in developing firmware for wearable and smart devices and software for virtual reality applications. As a student, I have taken courses in both software development and electrical engineering, and much of my coursework has centered on the integration of both domains. For example, I designed, developed, and tested a pacemaker for the ARM mBed platform (CIS 441), designed a supersalar, multi-stage pipelined RISC-like processor in Verilog (CIS 371), and developed a portable breadboard with a built-in function generator and oscilloscope that interfaces with a mobile phone (ESE 350). Most of my other coursework is related mainly to software development, including creating an operating system with a preemptive, priority-based scheduler (CIS 380) and developing an Android app to help students prioritize their assignments (CIS 350).My work experience has also focused on integrated software and hardware development. As a research assistant, I designed a pressure-sensitive mat with applications in measuring and correcting sitting posture, as well as for detecting standing poses in an interactive yoga system. As part of this, I developed sensor-reading firmware for the microcontroller and designed and laid out a circuit to drive an electroluminescent light panel. At Intel, I worked on a variety of projects for sports applications, including developing a software application in Unity to recreate and automate a sports broadcast, writing firmware to measure lower body motion, and documenting an Android application that interfaces with a smart watch via Bluetooth. When I'm not busy with work or school, I enjoy biking on trails, traveling, and going to the beach. I also enjoy recreating classic video games as a hobby. Please feel free to contact me at harkj@seas.upenn.edu with questions or opportunities.

Listed skills include Python, Matlab, Microsoft Office, Embedded Software, and 13 others.
