Experimental data was subsequently used to guide the synthesis of large single crystals for gamma-ray spectroscopy.• Developed a novel characterization technique to detect cracks in Bi2Te3 wafers used for radioisotope thermoelectric generators using microscopy and ultrasound spectroscopy.
