I am an Emeritus Professor with broad experience of academic and high-technology industrial environments. At the University of Glasgow I was Professor of Optoelectronic Systems, Head of the James Watt School of Engineering, Dean for Transnational Education and Director of the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre. I was co-founder and CTO of Intense Ltd (2000-2012) which raised £50m of funding, fabricated high power semiconductor lasers and manufactured amongst the most advanced semiconductor laser modules in the world.I was President of the IEEE Photonics Society in 2008-09. I currently mentor several early career individuals holding Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowships and Enterprise Fellowships.
