John Clark Email and Phone Number
I am an experienced Chartered Mechanical Engineer with proficiency in Software Engineering, particularly in C# .NET. I created Star Data Analytics which provides the Ethos service focused on conserving energy and providing deep insights into equipment operation by collecting and analysing data.My professional journey began as a mechanical design engineer, and I quickly progressed to a consulting role. Combining my love for software development and engineering, I created the award-winning Ethos consultancy service. As a result of its success, I established the new Star Data Analytics department and expanded the team to five full-time employees. Currently, my role is quite diverse, encompassing software engineering, mechanical engineering, sales, and management. I have a lifelong passion for technology and take pleasure in the creative process of problem-solving.

Director Of Star Data AnalyticsStar Refrigeration Jan 2020 - PresentGlasgow, United KingdomEthos is the product/service that I started creating in 2016 whilst working as a consultant. It is a data-driven energy management service that provides engineering insight into customer equipment. I built the majority of the solution in C# .NET, which encompasses the wide scope of data collection, transmission, storage, processing, and display of reports. The Ethos solution spans 30+ repositories, there are circa 100 data loggers in operation and it has collected circa 70 billion “tags” so far. The solution interfaces with multiple external services and the customer-facing web portal serves over a hundred active users (a mix of internal single sign-on accounts and external customer accounts). For the first three years, I was the sole developer, then in the latter four years, I have had the support of another developer, with whom I provide mentoring and support. Delivering an innovative technology service to a traditional engineering company brings challenges. I continually break new ground and often have to take the lead, researching solutions and problem-solving with limited support.I spend approximately half of my time in software engineering and for the remainder have to “wear many hats” to progress the service. I am also involved in developing the Mechanical Engineering digital twin methodology and meeting with customers to drive new sales and cultivate relationships.Ethos has won four awards (2021 TCS&D, 2019 TCS&D, 2018 RAC, 2018 ACR). Given the growth and success of Ethos, I was pleased to form the Star Data Analytics department, which provided more control as well as a broader focus on data than just energy management. -
ConsultantStar Refrigeration Jan 2015 - Dec 2019I carried out traditional consultancy work for the first year: specifications for tender, technical projects, safety-related inspections for pressure safety, and ammonia safety. Then, for the next four years, I worked predominantly on developing the Ethos service as described above. Initially, I focused on determining the best way to collect the data and structuring the analysis. Latterly, I focused on developing the digital twin and scaling the solution. -
Design EngineerStar Refrigeration Jun 2010 - Dec 2014Graduate engineer in the design office. Core activity was taking an industrial contract from the sales team and carrying it through to the site commissioning team. Primary tasks were detailed design calculations/drawings, procurement, and project management. I predominantly worked on industrial applications for food storage and manufacturing. However, I also was involved in innovative projects such as power generation from waste heat, high ambient mud coolers, and high-end petrochemical hydrocarbon systems. -
Student EngineerStar Refrigeration May 2009 - Sep 2009Student design engineer in the design office supporting industrial contracts with calculations and procurement. Main highlight was carrying out detailed system modelling to maximise efficiency on a 14MW 90°C heat pump for the district heating system in the town of Drammen, Norway. -
Student EngineerNcr Corporation May 2008 - Sep 2008Learned 3D CAD using Pro Engineer. Created models for 3d printing and CNC machining in the development team. -
Student EngineerSpie Matthew Hall May 2007 - Sep 2007Spent the summer assisting the project manager on building sites. SPIE was responsible for the building services on a number of new-build schools. This mostly involved project management and procurement.
