Developed genetic engineering strategies designed to enhance n-butanol production in Clostridium beijerinckii using targeted gene disruption and over expression/constitutive expression of relevant genes. Implemented a course of strain development using chemical mutagens designed to overcome fermentation inhibitors and increase product yields and process efficiency. Assisted in fermentation scale-ups by developing standard operating procedures for the detection of bacterial and phage contaminants in large scale fermentations

Analyzed metabolic pathways in bacteria and determined the best options for engineering strains of bacteria to overproduce L-threonine, L-tryptophan, and L-lysine by fermentation. Used molecular biology techniques, including PCR and transduction, transformation/ electroporation to create new strains of Escherichia coli which overproduce L-threonine, leading to an increase in titer and yield and two patented inventions. Successfully isolated phage resistant mutants for both gram positive and gram negative production strains and implemented a SOP for controlling phage outbreaks at the production (25,000+ gallon fermentation) level. Assisted in the development of new methods of purifying fermentation products and controlling downstream quality of fermentation processes. Assisted in the development of biochemical assays to detect product formation in fermentation broths.
