Conducted research in the area of Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP) chemistry. The primary goal is to expand the scope of substrates available for catalytic hydrogenation, with an emphasis on new synthetic routes toward chiral amines. The development of new FLP catalysts, such as borenium cations (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012), may provide additional routes toward this goal.This work also spawned a collaboration with GreenCentre Canada to develop scrubbers that improve the efficiency of FLP hydrogenation catalysts. (publication in progress)I had served as the groups' NMR manager (Bruker 400 MHz spectrometer), as well as supervised undergraduate and graduate students.

Conducted research toward doctoral degree in synthetic organometallic chemistry under thesupervision of Dr. Samuel A. Johnson, with an emphasis on catalysis for organic transformations andtransition metal building blocks for magnetic materials.- Software: WinGX/ORTEP, Platon, enCIFer/publiCIF, Chemical Kinetics Simulator,WinEPR/WinSimfonia, WinDNMR, NUTS, Bruker NMR Suite (XWinNMR/XWinPlot, TOPSPIN)Gaussian 03/09, Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) ChemDraw, and Endnote.- Techniques: Air sensitive/Schlenk techniques, cannula transfer, vacuum transfer, sublimation,distillation, crystallization, and column chromatography.- Lab responsibilities: Glove box maintenance, base/acid bath, solvent system maintenance,drying deuterated solvents, vacuum pump maintenance (including rebuilding), training andsupervising students.

I was responsible for the safety and teaching of undergraduate students during their laboratory sessions, and have worked with both first year and upper year students in the areas of general, analytical, and organometallic chemistry. Tasks included supervision, marking, conducting tutorials as well as engaging the students in scientific conversation by asking open ended questions challenging them to think outside their provided manuals and understand why they do things.
