The Downstream Process Development team develops scalable and economically robust processes for recovery, and purification of industrial bioproducts made from fermentation. In collaboration with the pilot plant help validate newly-developed processes at 300L scale. Information generated from pilot plant trials is used for projecting the equipment, labor requirements, raw material usage, yields, costs and cycle times for a new manufacturing-scale separations train. Test bench scale separations and effectively implement and transfer proof of concept theories to pilot scale, thus derisk problems faced at larger scale. Analyze impurities seen in fermentation broth to produce and help purify product to meet product specification based on regulatory filings.Provide on-site technical support for processes transferred to CMO in Europe (250m3).

Safely operate 20L/300L Pilot scale fermenters (CIP/SIP), and recovery process equipment including centrifugation and filtration with the goal of generating high-quality process development data. Coordinate setup, operation, and troubleshooting components of equipment. Perform daily process sampling and prepare samples for routine analysis, and enter experimental data into working database. Recovery stream processes utilizing liquid solid separations using DX centrifuge as well as liquid liquid separations utilizing the Alfa Laval LAPX. Operation of TFF graver, spiral wound membranes and homogenizer.

Conduct experiments on various biological systems, conduct studies for determining the optimal conditions of cell growth, noting its fermentation cycle, and preparing technical data and reports on experimental findings. Maintain and Calibrate fermenter instrumentation. Contamination Screening, bacterial and fungal plating. Prepare and optimize media and reequip lab supplies for high throughput strain screening.
