About Jill Winter

I am a Molecular Biologist with extensive research experience in large companies, small companies and academia. I have worn many hats (bench scientist, principle investigator, manager of multiple teams) and moved through multiple disciplines (from making transgenic plants to seeking therapeutics and biomarkers in oncology and infectious diseases). I have discovered that, regardless of the goal, dedicated management of the project is a key element that allows any project to flourish. Because I am a scientist, I specialize in a scientific management that is different from business driven project management; I believe my position helps all investigators get the most from their data with emphasis on moving forward with meaningful findings. Currently I co-manage multidisciplinary projects that require the coordination of large and distant research and clinical teams. My role is to keep the momentum going, to make sure data are analyzed and acted upon, that goals are accomplished and secondary steps taken based on the information gathered. I am data driven, goal directed and timeline sensitive; I enjoy working with people. I work on projects that I believe will one day improve lives.Specialties: Critical Thinking, Technology Appraisal, Creativity, Perseverance. Major focus areas over the years: Biomarkers, Therapeutic Antibodies and Fusion Toxins, Phage Display, Antimicrobials.

  • Catalysis Foundation For Health
    Program Director
Catalysis Foundation For Health Nov 2009 - Present
    Emeryville,Ca
As a Senior Program Officer at Catalysis Foundation I have had the privilege of working with the top tier of tuberculosis infectious disease scientists and doctors. Over the last >decade the TB teams that I have worked with (predominantly from Stellenbosch University and the NIH) have moved several 'biomarkers of treatment response' projects from a dream to reality and generated much cited data. I am currently working as co-PI on the 'transcriptomics of TB relapse.' Our data is generated from Paxgene tubes collected from 7 timepoints per patient(300 patients) in an exceptionally executed clinical trial in which treatment response and follow-up was carefully documented and important clinical variables, including PET/CT patient profiles, are also well documented. We hope to report on our findings from the transcriptomics data in 2025. In general, I participate in grant writing and scientific reporting to funders, fostering communication and aiding in the oversight of multi-disciplinary international projects. In this particular transcriptomics project I play a more intense role, interacting with the team in bi-weekly discussions to monitor progress as we keep an aggressive timeline on track. I also support several other TB projects at the oversight level.
  • Angelica Therapeutics, Inc.
    Consultant
Angelica Therapeutics, Inc. Mar 2008 - Mar 2011
    Emeryville,Ca
Angelica Therapeutics is bringing a promising new platform of fusion toxins to market. De-immunized diphtheria toxin will improve therapies for a variety of indications. I consult for a small but persistent group that coordinates assays from several providers in order to make this happen. Recent data are very exciting, leading us to seek more fusion partners for this very potent toxin.
  • Children'S Hospital Oakland Research Institute
    Associate Staff Scientist
Children'S Hospital Oakland Research Institute Feb 2004 - Nov 2007
This position allowed me to return to the bench with a small team of skilled people working toward understanding vaccine responses to Neisseri meningitidis subgroup A. This was my first experience working with a clinical trial, working in a BSL3 facility and performing human serum assays. I particularly enjoyed working with the Lucas and Reason labs to sort B cells from vaccinated individuals and clone out the Fv regions of the antibody genes for further characterization.
  • Chiron Corporation
    Associate Director Cancer Biology
    Chiron Corporation 1993 - 2003
    Emeryville,Ca
I began working at Chiron as part of a biological diversity team, employing peptide phage display for assay development. I also collaborated with a combi-chem team to discover new antimicrobials. Although we were the first to describe peptoid antibiotics, these and others fell by the wayside as management changed at Chiron. Ultimately, as Chiron developed, I managed a team using phage display of ScFv to discover new therapeutic antibodies and to work on target discovery. We used therapeutic target antibodies on complex immuno-histochemistry arrays to determine target distribution. We also analyzed microarray data provided by another arm of the group in search of biomarkers and targets that would stratify cancer patients into more treatable subsets. To my understanding some of these targets are still in the pipeline, some compensation for our restrictions on publishing them.
  • Sandoz Crop Protection
    Principal Scientist
    Sandoz Crop Protection 1989 - 1993
This was a creative and fun group where we worked together to find new ideas for plant improvement. We worked with M13 peptide display libraries as we sought to discover peptides that would deter the corn root work from feeding on corn roots. Ultimately we had hoped to encode these peptides on a root specific promoter and interfere with the sensory receptors of the pest.
  • University Of Missouri, Columbia, Mo
    Assistant Professor Biochemistry
University Of Missouri, Columbia, Mo 1987 - 1989
This was a brief experience of academia in which I wrote grants and worked at the bench with a very talented student and a variety of others to study the stress induction of heat shock genes in plants. We were early pioneers describing the developmental regulation of Hsp70, but since it was in plants, there was far less enthusiasm than in mammals. I was pleased to leave the world of academia to return to the industrial trappings I so enjoyed as a postdoc at Monsanto.

I learned all about transgenic plants at this position where my job was to characterize gene expression (especially stress induction) and to clone various target genes to support the bigger program. This was where I first learned about inducing and cloning heat shock genes.
