In August 2015, Jim Akers was named Manufacturing & Engineering (M&E) Technology Fellow in recognition of the many contributions he has made to the Polyolefins business and to Dow for more than 30 years. In his current position, Akers is a leveraged resource for Dow’s Plastics businesses, working across all technologies and supporting 136 assets at 20 sites that produce more than 19 billion pounds of product annually. Akers joined Dow in 1979 at the Plaquemine site in R&D for Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) Process Research, developing several significant process improvements, and eventually running two pilot plants and leading CPE and Slurry Polyethylene Process Research, prior to moving to Slurry PE Manufacturing in 1988. In 1996, he was recruited into the Polyethylene Technology Center and was given the unusual charter of working on whatever interested him and created value for the Company. In 2000, Akers took on a special assignment as the first Global Planning Improvement leader, working with the Supply Chain organization to improve their techniques and work processes. In 2005, Akers added technology associate responsibilities for the TYRIN™ CPE and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) businesses. Akers returned to the Tech Center in 2008 and continues in that role today, leading JV interactions, IP Protection efforts, and conducting strategic and operations analysis for several businesses in Performance Plastics. He also continues to consult with other Dow businesses. Akers is a member of the Corporate M&E IP Protection Team, the Corporate GAUR Team, and leads the Performance Plastics Trade Secret Protection Team. He holds three patents and has authored 28 CRI reports. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University. Akers serves actively in his community and church. He holds Black Belts in Han Mu Do and Tae Kwon Do. Akers is married with two adult children and one grandchild.
