He’s a nationally certified Fire Service Instructor and holds EVT F-2 National Certification on Fire Apparatus Design. Working with fire Departments, Districts and Municipal agencies he guides them in the design and build process from conception to delivery.   With more than 30 years in custom fire apparatus design, specification writing, providing quality assurance inspections and conducting in-service training, I formed J. Lyons Fire Consultants out of a need by firefighting agencies and municipal governments who were seeking someone knowledgeable to be an impartial advisor in the areas of fire apparatus design and purchasing. I provide consultation services to fire departments, municipal government agencies and sales companies engaged in purchasing, selling and servicing of fire trucks and equipment.One service I offer is guidance in preparing apparatus specifications that meet the needs of the fire department but allow for multiple bidders, with a goal of attaining the best product for the best price, without favoritism to any one manufacturer. I also advise the client on how to properly qualify, choose and award a purchase to a vendor. It’s an important aspect as fire trucks can coast as much as 1.5 million dollars and the contract shouldn’t be awarded to any manufacturer without being properly vetted.
