MUFC is a nonprofit formed in 1991 by the US Farm Bill to promote urban and community forests. Jim has helped define "Edible Forests" to complement urban and community supported agriculture on a permaculture model for city parks, civic groups, churches and neighborhoods, including distressed areas.

Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health is the largest and most established retreat center for yoga, health, and holistic living in North America. Programs at Kripalu are led by many of the world’s most accomplished teachers in yoga, self-discovery, and holistic health and are designed to provide people with tools they can apply in their daily lives. Jim is a member of the Administrative Council (governing board) of the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SSARE) program. He is Communications Committee Chairman, a member of the Council's Executive Committee, and serves on the Producer Grant and On-Farm Research Committee that awards grants for small farms and producers both operating independently and in collaboration with universities, extension services and nonprofits. Funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), SSARE operates under cooperative agreements with the University of Georgia, Fort Valley State University, and the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture to offer competitive grants to advance sustainable agriculture in America's Southern region (FL, GA, AL, MS. LA, TX, OK, AR, TN, KY, NC, SC, VA, PR, VI). In addition to reviewing grants submitted for funding, Jim has helped provide social networking and traditional public relations outreach for SSARE at conferences, give talks at meetings, and meet with administrators of universities and nonprofits in the region to explain and promote the organization's work.

MSAN is devoted to education, networking and consumer outreach for sustainable farmers in Mississippi. Jim is a founding member of the board of directors; he has acted as a consultant in its formation, advising the board in capacity building, goals and strategic decision making, while giving technical assistance to disadvantaged and underserved farmers with MSAN's local programs funded via the Wallace Center of Winrock Foundation and the Appalachian Regional Commission.

GGSIM is a statewide educational outreach nonprofit, focused on improving poverty, education, agriculture, health and the environment. Jim spearheaded activities regarding sustainable agriculture and organic growing methods, hosting talks, giving speeches and moderating panel discussions across the state. He served on the executive committee, on the board of directors, and as chair of the food systems committee. He helped create a networking organization for sustainable farmers in the state, the Mississippi Sustainable Agriculture Network, and helped develop it as an independent nonprofit.

Jim provided outreach for five Southern states: MS, LA, AL, GA & FL in an office he helped establish. He gave instruction on social media and helped develop a multi-faceted communications plan for the organization that incorporates traditional print and new media. He aided in establishing a presence in the region via his skills in public relations and social networking (public appearances, speeches, PowerPoint presentations, news releases and other in-person and media outreach). An NGO, NCAT's mission is helping people by championing small-scale, local, and sustainable solutions to reduce poverty, promote healthy communities, and protect natural resources.

CNG is a nationwide nongovernment, nonprofit offering third-party certification for small-scale, direct-market farmers and beekeepers using organic growing methods. Jim helped develop its social networking strategy and advised on developing goals, strategic planning and capacity building. A former board member, Jim also served as an advisor on certification regarding fruit and vegetable growing and other issues.

Specializing in seasonal organic heirloom and gourmet produce, tended by hand, picked fresh and delivered within hours to some of Jackson's finest food establishments, ShooFlyFarm developed a reputation for fine produce in a local food market. MFVGA is the statewide nonprofit trade organization of commercial fruit and vegetable growers. Jim's public relations and marketing skills earned him election to lead the organization. A popular public speaker, he provided a friendly, informed public face to environmental issues.

Jim served as writer/editor for The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi’s Gannett-owned statewide newspaper and its website clarionledger.com. His tasks included reworking print stories for the web, especially for search engine optimization (SEO), editing blogs to appear in print (cross publishing), as well as copy editing and editorial and column writing. With almost two decades of professional online experience dating back to the 1990s, he was an early adopter and participant in the development of core Web 2.0 principles.He came to The Clarion-Ledger when it merged with the Jackson Daily News, where he was a top line and section editor, trained as a copy editor at USA TODAY.

Editor in chief of Mississippi Out-of-Doors, statewide monthly magazine for 25,000-member environmental and conservation organization. Collaborated with writers, photographers, government officials, scientists, and the public to put together a magazine timely and relevant to its readers. Topics in any given issue ranged from technical environmental aspects of the Farm Bill to proposed hunting and fishing regulations to organic gardening tips to children's games.
